Whilst looking through chapters 4 and 15 in the 2014 BFI Statistical Yearbook I found out some interesting discoveries.
Animation, action and comedy were the most successful at the UK box office. On the other hand, war, documentary and romance were the least popular which may be because of the fact that these genres don't appeal to as many audiences. Comedy had the most films released in 2013-2014 and 153 films in this genre were made in this time period. Compared to Comedy, only 33 Animated films were made and Action had 47. This information about the genres shows that the film productions are wider and more on going. They're constantly consistent because they know how wide of an audience they have. These genres appeal to more film audiences therefore the viewer knows that they won't be disappointed since so many films from their favourite genre are released every year.
AUDIENCES
15-24 year olds made up the largest population of cinema admissions in the UK. The most successful comedy with this age group was The Hangover Part III
Quartet was the film most popular with over 50's and the genre of this film is a Drama and Comedy. Action, Comedy and Adventure were the genres most popular with men whilst Romance,Documentary and Animation were the ones most popular with women, also UK films appealed most to females. Who could blame us? Have you seen British actors! They are too beautiful to describe. One Direction: This Is Us, Wreck It Ralph and Despicable Me 2 were the 3 films most popular with the 7-14 age group which tells us they prefer animated movies and documentaries about hot boy bands! Frozen, The Croods and Jack and the Giant Slayer were the 3 films most popular with 35-44 year olds which could simply be because of the fact that they have to accompany their children. This is a huge contribution to animation being the most successful genre at the box office because they may not have an interest at all, they're just doing a favour for their little one.
Django Unchained, Fast & Furious 6 and Rush were most popular with the 25-34 age group. The films most popular with middle class audiences were Rush, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Fast & Furious 6, Despicable Me 2 and Oz The Great & Powerful. Scotland audiences prefer home-grown characters and locations such as Star Trek Into The Darkness and Filth. On the other hand there's no link between popular films in London. The top 3 films in London in 2014 were Django Unchained, Fast & Furious 6 and Gravity.
