'Watching' documentary response
Thomas Sutcliffe says "films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible." By this i think Sutcliffe means that you need to catch the audience' attention and intrigue them as early as possible.
Jean Jacques Beineix says that creating 'instant arousal' can cause a risk of too many questions being asked along with the possibility of confusion. Beineix went on to say that the bar is then set too high and the amount of excitement is then expected through out. Beineix believes that openings should allow the film to build up slowly.
"A good beginning must make the audience feel that they do not know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that they do not know too little." This means that you need to keep the audience hooked without giving away too much. However the audience need to be able to make an initial judgement.
"A favorite trick of film Noir" is when a film starts with an ending.
The opening of the film The Shining creates suspense as you think that its just a picturesque setting but the camera follows the car showing that they are most probably going the wrong way into danger as they are driving into the shadows.
